“HE DID not.”

“I kid you not—he said it. Word for word.”

Of course, I didn’t tell Naomi the whole truth. I shouldn’t have said anything at all, but it was easier to unload to her about the sex talk and omit the demon talk. It was a way of getting rid of some of my stress at least. Maybe if I did, I’d be able to deal more calmly with the whole devil worship situation. Because right now, I wasn’t sure I couldn’t do that without becoming hysterical.

Naomi shook her head in disbelief. “That old smoothie. He said he wanted to do you on the piano?” She reached for her cell phone and began prodding at the screen. “Oh, I just have to know what film he’s seen that in. Because no way did he think of that on the spur of the moment.”

“I have to admit, it was kind of sexy when he said it.”

She looked up in satisfaction from her cell phone. “I knew it. ‘Pretty Woman.’ That’s where he got the idea. I guess Leo’s Mister Billionaire, and you’re the tart. Charming.” She rolled onto her front on her bed and propped herself up on her elbows. Her tightly curled long hair fell around her hands. With an artful grin, she said, “It takes quite some nerve to talk bollocks like that to a girl you’re trying to cop off with. Not quite what I’d have expected from Dauphin.”

“Why?” I just wasn’t getting this image Naomi had of Leo as some kind of uber-nerd. “Just because he isn’t sociable?”

Maybe it’s because his family is into the occult? The whole thing sounded surreal even inside my head. I couldn’t imagine saying it out loud.

“Not sociable?” Naomi considered this while threading a long tress of hair through the fingers of her right hand. “Leo’s in his final year. And he’s not a bad-looking chap, I’ll give you that. He could have that whole brooding genius thing going for him if he wanted. Could have been around the block a few times, easy. But does he? Not so much. Bryce Idlewild seems to be the only girl who’s ever gotten close to him. “

“Ah,” I said. “Bridie.”

“Yes, indeed, I’d say she’s your main rival.” Naomi cocked her head on one side. “But I think you can take her. You’ve got, I don’t know...”

I could barely hear her through the flurry of panicky thoughts that were zipping around my head, but like a climber hanging onto a mountain ledge, I kept my focus on this gossipy chat. “I’ve got what?”

“That whole violinist thing for God’s sake. You lot are so bloody dramatic and romantic with those wretched instruments. Swanning around in your long frocks, getting all swept up in the heat of the moment. Then there’s the violin itself—all sinewy and tactile, horse-hair and energy, the hand-carved wood, all made in that Italian village, wherever it is.”

“Cremona,” I said.

“Right. C’mon, you know I’m telling the truth. Plus, you’re Latina.”

“Half Latina. My mom is Italian-American.
